The summer splash park is the draw but doesn't open until 11am (typically late June through summer), so it's a back-half-of-the-morning plan, not a 7am one.
A few standouts just outside East Orange — all within about 20 minutes. The early-open crowd ends up at these no matter which town they start in.

The area's big community center on Northfield Ave in West Orange — two heated indoor pools, a fitness center, and early-childhood programs, with members in from 5:30am (7 on weekends). A short drive for a genuine early indoor swim or toddler play when it's freezing or raining. It's membership-based, so call about family-swim times.
It's 6:45am, the kids are up, and East Orange feels closed. It's dense and urban, so dedicated indoor play is thin — but the parks open at first light, a 24-hour ShopRite and two all-night Dunkins never close, and a couple of sit-down spots open at 7. Here's the 6–10am gap.
East Orange is wedged against Orange, Bloomfield, and Newark, so read this as a radius. Within about 20 minutes you reach the indoor playgrounds and kids' gyms it lacks — over in West Orange and Montclair. In town, lean on the parks and early food.
Outdoors, food, and a grocery walk-around. The city parks — Soverel, Oval, Columbian, Elmwood — are open from dawn and free. ShopRite on MLK Blvd is open 24 hours, and two Dunkins on Central Ave (523 Central and 255 Tremont) never close, with a third at 140 Central opening at 5am. Cafe By Us and B-B Bakery open at 7. The YMCA opens 7:30 on weekdays and the library not until 9, so the genuine 6–8am window is parks, ShopRite, and coffee.
Not a dedicated one — East Orange is dense and urban, and the in-town indoor option for kids is the East Orange YMCA (7:30am weekdays, closed weekends). For a true indoor playground you're looking at a short drive: My Gym in West Orange or the indoor-play spots in Montclair, most opening around 9am. In town before then, ShopRite's 24-hour aisles are the closest thing to an indoor walk-around.
Cafe By Us opens at 7am for a sit-down breakfast, and B-B Bakery at 7 for grab-and-go patties and pastries. Before that, the parks (Soverel, Oval, Columbian, Elmwood) are open from dawn, ShopRite is 24 hours for an indoor lap, and the Dunkins on Central Ave are open all night. If you need to get out of the house and nothing else is open, the East Orange or Brick Church train platforms run trains from about 6am — a free outing for a train-loving toddler.
