It's 6:45am, the kids are up, and every "things to do in Maplewood" list starts at 10am with a class schedule. The good news: Maplewood is unusually early — the town ordinance posts every park open at 5am, and the Village has coffee from 5:30. Here's what's actually open in the 6–10am gap.
Maplewood and South Orange share a border and a school district, with Millburn, West Orange, and Union minutes away — so read this as a radius. Within about 20 minutes you've got the Village cafes and parks here, plus South Mountain Reservation, the zoo, and indoor play a short drive north.
Maplewood is unusually good here. Every town park — Memorial, Maplecrest, DeHart, Borden — opens its grounds at 5am under the township ordinance, so you can walk Memorial Park's duck pond before sunrise (the playground equipment itself opens at 8). For coffee and breakfast, Starbucks in the Village opens 5:30, the Springfield Ave Dunkin' around 5, then Village Coffee, Bagel Chateau, and Park Wood Diner at 7 and The Able Baker at 7:30. CVS on Valley St opens at 7 if you need a roof.
The park grounds open at 5am, but the playground equipment is posted 8am to sunset under the town ordinance — same rule at Memorial, Maplecrest, DeHart, and Borden. So before 8 you're walking the park paths, the Memorial Park pond loop, or the reservation at the edge of town; the play structures open at 8.
For indoor play, the South Mountain YMCA (13 Jefferson Ave) and The Little Gym (1807 Springfield Ave) both get going around 8:30am — the Y has a pool, the Little Gym runs parent-child classes. The library does NOT help the early gap: both the Main branch (51 Baker St) and the Hilton branch open at 10am, and the Hilton branch doesn't open until noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays. And note there's no supermarket left in Maplewood to walk around — Kings closed in 2020 — so CVS at 7am is the in-town indoor fallback.
