It's 7am, the kids are up, and Montclair's good stuff — the art museum, the gyms, the library — doesn't open for hours. Here's the honest 6–10am answer: which parks open at dawn, which bagel shops have the lights on by 5, which supermarket lets you do a stroller lap at 6, and which trains a toddler can watch.
Montclair blends right into its neighbors, so treat this as a radius. Anything within about 20 minutes counts — Upper Montclair, Verona, Cedar Grove, Glen Ridge, Bloomfield. But almost everything below is physically in Montclair: it's dense and walkable, and the early hours fill better than you'd think.
More than you'd think — just not indoor play. The township parks (Edgemont, Nishuane, Glenfield, Mountainside) open at 6am by ordinance and are free. For food, Sunrise Bagels opens at 5 and Hot Bagels Abroad at 5:30, with Dunkin' on Bloomfield Ave at 5. And ACME on Valley Rd opens at 6 for an indoor stroller lap. The indoor gyms, library, and museum all open at 9 or later.
Not before 9am, and nothing is true drop-in. Kidville's reserved playspace starts at 9:15am Mon and Fri ($20/child, book ahead, capped at 16 kids), and The Little Gym's first toddler class is a 9:00am Wednesday slot — both class- or reservation-based, not walk-in. There's no Imagine-That-style drop-in indoor playground inside Montclair; the nearest is a drive out of town. Before 9, the realistic answer is a park.
