South Orange shares a border and school district with Maplewood, minutes from West Orange and Millburn — so this is a radius. But the town itself punches above its size: two 5am coffee stops, dawn parks around Mead Street, two early supermarkets, and train stations to watch. Within 20 minutes you add West Orange's zoo and indoor play.
More than you'd think for a small town. Dunkin' and the Starbucks on Sloan St both open at 5am right by the train station, Hot Bagels Abroad at 5:30, and Orange House Cafe (built for commuters, with a live train monitor inside) at 6 on weekdays. The Mead Street parks — Meadowland, the duck pond, Cameron Field, Floods Hill — plus shaded Grove Park are open from dawn and free. The supermarkets, library, and indoor play don't open until 7–9.
Not dedicated indoor play — Little Brain Lab opens at 9am and only Friday–Sunday (and it's paid, by appointment).
